About the area

Those of us in the know are not in the least bit surprised that the Lake District has just been voted Best UK Holiday Destination. Whether you are after an activity holiday or a place to relax and recharge your batteries, this is the place to come. The sheer variety of fabulous scenery never ceases to amaze us: from spectacular mountains, to green ice-cut valleys and blue shimmering lakes.

Human activity over millennia has added to the charm of the region, with picture perfect villages and small market towns which blend into the landscape.

But that’s not all! At the edge of all this lies a unique coastal landscape typified by quiet beaches, salt marshes – a haven for wild life - and working towns, such as Barrow with its abbey, ship building museum and internationally famous wildlife park.

Yes! There really is something for everyone whatever the weather. And no – it’s not always raining. Facing into the westerly winds we do get our share, so come prepared – it is though what makes this place really special.

How to get here

By Train

The nearest stations are Ulverston (6 miles) and Oxenholme (22 miles). For more details about public transport, please click on to the ‘links’ page.

By Road

From M6 (Jn 36): A590 towards Ulverston and Barrow. Five miles past Newby Bridge on a section of dual carriageway take the right turning at Greenodd signed Workington (A 5092 leading to A595).

Travel about half a mile. Take Road signed to the right indicating ‘Colton and Oxen Park’.

Travel 2 miles on a minor road. Ignore side roads. Just beyond the sign marking the start of the hamlet of Colton, on a left hand bend, right turn at sign ‘Colton Church and Bouth’.

Very minor road goes up a short hill and swings sharply right. Ignore the road on left to the church. Go past Greenhead Farm on right. Go through gate across the road. Forest Field is immediately on your right.

Note to those of you who have blind faith in your 'Sat Nav', you will probably find that it wants you to turn off the A590 earlier than we have recommended. That's fine as long as you like very narrow lanes with few passing places. Watch out for cyclists and horses as well as other motorists who believe they are the only ones driving today!

Please note that at the moment the sheep are grazing on the fell so you will need to open and then close the gate across the lane leading to our house.
